Krewcial - Monastic 2xCD
Krewcial is a Belgian producer, MC, DJ, filmmaker, and radio pioneer. He began making hip-hop as a teenager after being inspired by early New York rap culture and became one of the first artists in Belgium to rap extensively in English.
Monastic is one of the earliest underground hip-hop releases to come out of Belgium. Originally released on cassette in November 1995, the album contains 27 tracks and captures Krewcial at a raw, experimental stage, blending dusty sample-based beats, introspective lyrics, instrumentals, and underground boom-bap aesthetics.
The sound is heavily influenced by early-90s independent rap, especially the conscious and alternative underground scenes emerging from California. The collaborations with Mystik Journeymen and The Grouch on 4 tracks show that Krewcial was already building international connections at a time when European underground hip-hop was still very isolated.
